Launching Economic Empowerment Manual: Why We Do It and Why It Matters

At Olive Right to Health Initiative (ORHI), economic empowerment is not an optional add-on to our work, it is a necessity. We are proud to officially launch our Economic Empowerment Programme under the FEF-OSC 2025 Project, focused on supporting young Female Sex Workers (FSW) and Females Who Use Drugs (FWUD) to build sustainable livelihoods, restore dignity, and reclaim control over their futures.

For many of the young women we work with, economic vulnerability is the root cause of multiple challenges, exposure to violence, poor mental health, limited access to healthcare, and dependence on unsafe survival strategies. Without stable income or skills, choice becomes a luxury. This programme was designed to change that reality by equipping young women with practical skills, start-up support, mentorship, and a structured pathway to economic independence.

Our approach goes beyond training. We combine skills acquisition, mental health support, rights-based advocacy, and systems strengthening to ensure empowerment is sustainable. From catering and pastries to beauty and cosmetology, participants are supported to choose skills aligned with their interests and local market opportunities. Alongside this, our Community Economic Empowerment Manual provides a practical guide for continuous learning, replication, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that empowerment does not end with one project cycle.

We do this work because empowerment transforms lives. When young women are supported economically, they gain confidence, improve their mental well-being, access health services more freely, and contribute positively to their families and communities. Economic empowerment is not just about income, it is about choice, safety, and dignity.

We invite partners, stakeholders, and community members to learn more about this initiative and to engage with the tools developed through this project.
